Robert Mint- Drifting Spirits

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Hailing all the way from Germany, Robert Mint makes a smashing debut on Nellie Recordings with the three track release, “Drifting Spirits”! Also taking two for the team are V I F and Human8 with their respective remixes.

With Robert Mint’s exceptional skill and background, he was able to come up with a highly-melodic trance-like original mix of “Drifting Spirits”. Ukranian producer, V I F also shows off his talent with a magical remix filled with vocalesque leads and swaying strings that fill the atmosphere with high spirit and uplifting energy.

The release garners a proper close care of Human8’s rendition, a piece filled with subtle elements and roaring basslines that both give way to a heavenly climax.

Having heard blissful progressive melodies from three different artists definitely marks another quality release from Nellie Recordings!

Kobana- The First Attempt

It's been a while since we visited the mind-levitating side of progressive house music, that is why this time around, we take a look at one of the interesting releases from Arrival Records-- Kobana's "The First Attempt". To our surprise, the release came with a remix from Japanese producer, Kazusa, as well as Greek soundsmith, Basil O' Glue.

The First Attempt (Original Mix)
Crisp synths and arp patterns do the opening for the track, while the unfaltering basslines and kicks pump the blood for this piece. Quite an interesting release come to think of it, "The First Attempt", when all its components are added together, produces a unique uplifting feel for its listeners.

The First Attempt (Kazusa Remix)
Kazusa is a fast-growing name in the progressive house scene, more specifically in the melodic-uplifting aspect of the genre. In the hands of Kazusa, "The First Attempt" garners a really chilled atmosphere!

The First Attempt (Basil O'Glue Remix)
Quite distant from the first two remixes, the Basil O'Glue caters a driving, metal-twisting, bone-breaking bass-work, and a trance-like feel. Enough has been said.

This interesting release from Kobana and Arrival Records definitely has full of surprises!

Oleg Izergin- Don't Stop

Sunday, June 27, 2010

Dezire Records rounds up another release entitled, "Don't Stop" as they induct Russian producer, Oleg Izergin to the crew. Aside from which, Jozhy K, a Dezire mainstay accepts remix duties for the track. "Don't Stop", the two-track release will be available for purchase starting June 28, 2010!

The original mix of "Don't Stop" is a melting pot of Mango-like basslines, a bass somewhat characterized to be thick-sounding, stubby and ascending in progression. Moreover, a subtle atmosphere akin to Dezza's wraps the track. On the flipside, Jozhy K strips down the track into a chilled soundtrack that embodies crisp and cool atmosphere with a serene guitar solo-- a masterpiece indeed!

The original mix of “

Next in line is a version dubbed as “
EDU presents 5tranger Remix”. EDU, or Eldar Abdulajev, is a familiar face on the label, but this time, he brings thundering riffs and spherical melodies as he introduces 5tranger to us.

Vinyl Dharma - Infidelity

Sunday, June 20, 2010

It was late April when we first had our hands on Ricky Inch’s “CLAZZ”, an eight-piece compilation that provided us our daily dose of soulful, jazzy, and classy deep house music! In that magnificent release, we first heard the “Ricky Inch & Golden Tony Jazzy Treatment” of Vinyl Dharma’s “Infidelity”. However, just last June 16, Cromarti Records spawned a new release that catered four exciting renditions of “Infidelity”, in which three came from Ricky Inch, and one from Hernan Cerbello.

Infidelity (Ricky Inch Back in 77 Mix)

As many would agree, the staple of this release is once again jazz-infused deep house music, but in this track, we get to hear defined vintage sounds from Inch. For the Back in 77 mix, Ricky Inch incorporates some elements from the disco era like the walking bassline and the swaying strings to his trademark style.

Infidelity (Ricky Inch Soulful Dub)

This next one is a remix that organic house music enthusiasts would enjoy. Groovy bass-work, soulful guitar solos, hip percussion, and sedative piano chords-- this Soulful dub from Ricky Inch definitely brings out the true essence of the music!

Infidelity (Ricky Inch Ambie Dub)

So we already have a disco-esque and soulful versions from Ricky Inch, and for the third, an ambient-oriented version for the beach or for your chill out sessions. This Ambie Dub relies heavily on warm pads, chilled synth-work as well as tropical-themed percussion-- this is how Ricky Inch does chill out music.

Infidelity (Hernan Cerbello We Used To Dub)

Hernan Cerbello is not a new name anymore. Actually, his sound has been spreading far and wide reaching record labels that include Anjunadeep. For this release, Hernan kicks off this remix with lush and disco-rendered sounds topped with infectious vocal dubs.

We finally get to experience highly-sophisticated music once again from Ricky Inch! With more than ten years of background in the deeper side of house music, there is without a doubt that we can expect more wonders from him in the near future!

Justin de Guzman- Malate / Vito Cruz

Thursday, June 17, 2010

Deeper Manila head honcho, Justin de Guzman walks us through the streets and districts of old Manila with his new Malate EP [DM015] that spawned two tracks, “Malate” and “Vito Cruz”.

Justin gives the nightlife district, Malate, a soundtrack through a mixture of deep and groovy basslines, heavily-filtered chords, and of course, a very sedative atmosphere!

Next stop, he names his tech-deep spectacle from one of the notable streets in the city, Vito Cruz. Aside from the pounding kicks brought to us by Justin, hollow and highly-reverbed chords also compose this discotheque groover.

Justin de Guzman effortlessly captures the true essence of Manila through his Malate EP. Close your eyes and listen to what the city has to offer.

PROFF - Abandoned / Albina / Tell

Sunday, June 13, 2010

One of my most favorite progressive house artists is back on Anjunadeep with a highly-definitive, three-track release, "Abadoned / Albina / Tell"! For those who do not know, Vladimir Ershov, or PROFF, is one of Russia's biggest progressive house producers, as well as a frontman in various prominent labels like Anjunadeep. In a nutshell, this new EP from PROFF exhibits a wide spectrum of new and road-tested sounds!

Abandoned
Alpha track, Abandoned gives off easy-going melodies as it represents the sound of Anjunadeep. Having a climax filled with blissful emotive piano melodies and deep-delving synths simply brings the best out of PROFF!

Albina
As Abandoned drifted deeper into the sound, this next track soared higher than the starry night sky. Albina caters PROFF's time-tested classic sound: thick and electrifying basslines and aerial and melodic synths and pads. We danced to Ershov's "My Personal Summer", "Sydney" and his remixes for "The World Doesn't Know", "Air Stream", and "Hola". Now, we have another excuse why we should never stop!

Tell
The last track also caters PROFF's unmistakable basslines; however, there is something in Tell you would not want to miss out on. I am talking about the highly-climactic peak enhanced with Anjunadeep's well-embraced echoing piano melodies and a very captivating vocal hook that takes the track to a higher state. Aside from which, PROFF tops this track off with starry melodies similar to the ones on his remix of Rest Point's "Air Stream"!

Abandoned, Albina, and Tell truly capture what progressive music is all about, and with PROFF being one of the forerunners of the scene, there will always be reasons to why we return to the genre we love.

Alex Dolby - Long Beach / Cairo

Sunday, June 6, 2010

Hope Recordings has been a key figure in the progressive house scene for more than a decade now. The label is responsible for stunning releases like this one, Alex Dolby's 2008 release-- "Long Beach / Cairo".

The moment I listened to "Long Beach", I felt that I have missed out on a lot of quality music in the past years. The track, having a light and easy-going appeal can make you move unconsciously. Having said these, this luscious, sun-drenched piece is never leaving my playlist.

The darker side of Alex Dolby is unveiled with the second track, "Cairo". With the techno-oriented basslines and melodies, it is quite certain to hear the obvious drift from the upbeat house sound.

With tracks like these, there is no doubt that Hope Recordings is one of the world's most productive labels!

Interview with TIMO JUUTI [2010]

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Timo Juuti is not really a new kid on the block. In fact, he has been known to be part of the groups, Syna and Deck Jagger before he started to work on his own in late 2008. As a solo producer, Timo's crafts broke boundaries in both the house and trance scenes. Moreover, his works, including a chart-topper from one of the industry's well-renown labels, Anjunabeats, are also appreciated by millions of listeners and several big names in the scene: Carl Cox, Armin van Buuren, and Tiesto. Currently making miracles on Wicked Recordings and Captured Music, Timo Juuti has dedicated his life to bringing to the fans only the best house music from his original tunes, as well as from Wicked Recordings Podcast, which is aired every fortnight.

Hello! How are you?

Hi Miguel! The year has been quite a rollercoaster for me in many ways, but things seem to settle down and I’m just enjoying the flow right now… so it’s all good!

Timo, how were you able to come up with such a definitive sound of yours?

I have a compulsory need to pump out ideas, flow of inspiration or whatever you want to call it, whenever they emerge. The raw and even primitive mold then shapes into something that reflects myself at that moment as melodies and rhythms. When working alone, you know how it is suppose to turn out so you get more self-critical but the result is more personal, where as in a group the end result is always a sum of many and easier to conclude. Either one has their benefits; right now I’m glad to be able to do both. It’s quite abstract, but I try not to think too much when doing actual composing. When remixing, I might get purposely more influenced of what I’ve heard lately.

How did Wicked Recordings come to be?

Wicked Recordings was found by my good friend Sami Saari when he was working for Captured music in Sweden and after he came back to Finland I tagged along. For the reasons behind it all, you should ask Sami but it’s pretty much like with many artists starting their own labels, to get rid of the unnecessary intermediary. Also many labels today release tracks after another with less focus on the artist. We want to do the opposite, which in a way makes us a bit old fashioned… that’s a bit sad really.

As an artist and an A&R manager of Wicked Recordings, what are your biggest achievements so far?

I’d like to measure my ‘achievements’, as how they felt at the time being. As an artist, it was a big thing for us when our second single with Syna in 2007 called ‘Do You Feel’ stayed on Finnish Single top 20 for 5 weeks. My solo stuff took off better than I expected as well, being able to do a remix for anjunabeats and gaining awesome support from the first release forward. Wicked has been able to get such a great foothold in the house scene within a short period, that I have to be a bit proud of it too. We got a great thing going on.

What do you think is the most difficult thing you’ve experienced as a label director?

The workload has been more than I expected, so keeping up with the schedule has been challenging, and sometimes you have to do stuff that aren’t really your cup of tee, for e.g. due to some very unforeseen circumstances I had to learn how to code flash a bit!

How is Timo Juuti like when not in the studios or dealing with label matters?

I used to play World of Warcraft quite a lot, and still do a bit! :D I also spend time at different gigs, to see what goes on in the music business outside of EDM scene. In addition, I read quite a lot and try to keep myself in shape, to keep up with the people on the dance floor. ;-)

Please name us your top three tracks at the moment.

Timo Juuti – Hypoactive (Cid Inc Remix)
Tim Berg – Bromance (Avicii Remix)
Ellrich & Plaice - Fucking Society (Olav Basoski Remix)

How do you take advantage of the internet as a marketing tool for your music?

Internet covers most of the marketing for myself and Wicked. We are very active on social media such as myspace and twitter and we also have a wicked fanpage on facebook where our in-house artists hang around and communicate with the fans. That’s what internet marketing mostly is for us, a really cool chance to stay in touch with the fanbase. Furthermore, we got our Wicked Podcast which is aired every fortnight, that plays a big part in the whole marketing scenario too.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

Obviously the chicken was a bit Hypoactive ;-)

What can we expect from Timo Juuti and, of course, Wicked Recordings?

A lot, and we’ll promise to do our best to fulfill those expectations. I got four remixes underway, as well as new originals and few tracks with Sami that are taking Wicked to a slightly more melodic big room direction by the end of Summer. In addition, Syna is releasing a new single called “Last Wish” soon. Oh, and of course many many more Wicked Podcast episodes!

I, Miguel Libre, would like to personally thank you for your time and patience in accomplishing this interview! Wish you all the best in your career and your label! Keep in touch!

Thanks to you Miguel, and to all your readers for the support. Keep on keeping on!

Timo Juuti - Hypoactive

Wicked Recordings A&R Manager and producer, Timo Juuti marks his return on the label with his dark and techy single, "Hypoactive". Aside from which, remix duties fall to the hands of Finnish sound-engineer, Cid Inc. and British producer, Matt Smallwood.

Hypoactive (Original Mix)
I've always enjoyed Timo's works on Wicked; they always send a different rush through your system whenever you listen to them. This time around, he unleashes an arsenal of sounds characterized to be deviant, and as cliché as it may sound, wicked. What I like about Timo Juuti is that anything he touches instantly turns to a dance-floor onslaught-- take my word for that!

Hypoactive (Cid Inc. Remix)
For a man known for establishing a sound that is capable of cracking your monitors wide-open, Cid Inc. is a sure-fit character on Wicked Recordings! To get to the point, Cid Inc.'s vicious remix on Juuti's Hypoactive is simply a pounding single, and people who enjoy the darker side of progressive and house music would crave for this one!

Hypoactive (Matt Smallwood Remix)
A non-stop, heart-pounding version brings the release to a close, courtesy of Matt Smallwood. I find this as a good alternative to the original mix.

Timo Juuti - Hypoactive (Matt Smallwood Remix) by Wicked Recordings

Timo Juuti is back that is why expect more stunning masterpieces from him and from Wicked Recordings!
