Something Good- Marathon: the Remixes

Thursday, April 7, 2011

It seemed like the original release of “Marathon / The Way We Do It” was just released last month, but the truth is, it was released roughly half-a-year ago! The two Finnish guys behind Something Good, together with Macarize, the brand new progressive house label from Sweden, knew that fans yearned for more— and for those who saw it coming, well you guys are right!

Macarize presents “Marathon: the Remixes” as its sophomore installment. Aside from it having a nicely-printed peach-colored sleeve, “Marathon: the Remixes” caters four tracks: one of which is the original re-release, while the remaining three are mint remixes from Lovetone, Lenno, and of course, Something Good themselves!

The original mix of Marathon, as many of you may know now, caters a nostalgic vibe topped off with sweeping arps, vintage-sounding percussion, and mellow leads. Next, Finland’s Anton Sonin, aka. Lovetone makes “Marathon” one of his own with his trademark razor-edged stabs and his coliseum-razing breakdown!

Contrasting the former, on the other hand, is a sun-dried disco-progressive reinterpretation from Lenno— it’s so upbeat that you can’t help but start nodding to the beat! If you’re, however, looking for the proper club-tailored remix for “Marathon”, then SG’s remix is what you are looking for!

For those who saw this remix package coming from Something Good and Macarize, well good for you, but for those who had been caught off-guard— welcome to the exciting world of Macarize! More surprises await you!

Something Good- Solence REMIXES

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

When Something Good had first unleashed Solence— their soul-awakening saxophone anthem from Nellie Recordings— avid supporters were left wanting more. . .

They heard the prayers.

Exclusively from Nellie Recordings, a special two-track remix EP dedicated to Solence is born! This time around, Something Good hooks up the release with their magnificent UU Island Refunk, while Heikki L takes-off with his signature La Terazza Remix— two fresh and road-tested reworks of SG’s masterpiece to die for!

First in line is Something Good’s UU Island Refunk— a tribute to UU Island, Helsinki’s Night of the Arts. If you have been craving for a version of Solence that would give more emphasis on the glorious saxophone solo, then this UU Island Refunk is definitely for you!

On the flipside, Finnish club-heavyweight, Heikki L appears on Nellie Recordings to drop his very own reinterpretation of Solence. Heikki L is known for his adrenaline-rushing breakdowns, and in this Heikki L La Terazza Remix, we get a piece of it!

Two brand new versions of Solence up for grabs, you definitely do not want to miss out on these!

Slightly different from their recent productions, Something Good’s Hypo Remix caters groovy chord-play topped with a very heavenly climax!

Tom Fall & Something Good- Reflections

Wednesday, September 1, 2010

Finnish producers are at it again! We kick off with a magical tune from Tom Fall and Something Good, "Reflections"-- a proud release from Silk Royal Records! Great surprises are also on their way thanks to remixes from A-list producers, Sundriver and Embliss.

Tom Fallenius, aka Tom Fall may be a new name here on Soundscapes, but he is no newbie in the scene. His track, "Cubic"first appeared on the second installment of the Anjunadeep mixed series and was early on released under Jaytech's Anjunadeep:02 Sampler. If you think "Reflections" is Tom's debut appearance on the label, then you are mistaken. He once took remix duties for Mango's highly-acclaimed release, "Good Morning Track" together with top-notched producers, Sunn Jellie and Sundriver.

Something Good, on the other hand, is already a frequent feature here on Soundscapes. We have been closely following Karolus and Otto's releases since their debut appearance on Nellie Recordings. Aside from which, it was in our exclusive interview with SG that we had been given a hint on this huge release with Mr. Fallenius.

Reflections (Original Mix)
According to Something Good's interview in HouseMusicEssentials, "Reflections" is the very first brainchild of the duo, and was created sometime a year ago. In the process, Tom Fall decided to remix the track for SG. After which, the duo realized that the original piece sounded a bit dated that is why after brainstorming for ideas among the three producers, they all decided to make it a collaboration.

As a whole, the track itself is one driving progressive house piece with explosive kicks to it. However, unlike the recent releases from Something Good and Tom Fall, "Reflections" caters a tranquil Asian-like ambiance. Moreover, listen to the piano climax and you will feel the imprinted Something Good vibe. Tom Fall's sound, on the contrary, is quite evident in the arpeggios. Very mind-levitating and climactic, this original version of "Reflections" is indeed a Finnish masterpiece.

Reflections (Sundriver Remix)
Polish producer, Przemyslaw Pawelski takes remix duties for "Reflections" under the guise Sundriver. His sound-- a melting pot of warm atmosphere and mystic progressive trance melodies-- appears once again on Silk. With this, the Sundriver remix is one beautiful piece that would effortlessly appeal to its listener's emotions.

Reflections (Embliss Remix)
For the closing track of the release, we get to hear a fine remix from Tim Brandwijk, aka. Embliss. Like Sundriver, Embliss is also a familiar face on the label.

The Embliss remix kicks off with echoing vocalesque samples, topped off with a laid-back sound and a lush atmosphere-- another quality release from Tim Brandwijk himself!

Always surprising their listeners, Tom Fall and Something Good present "Reflections"! Support this release today!

Monday, August 16, 2010

Leuteris Pimenidis, more known as Terry da Libra is without a doubt, one of Greece’s hidden treasures! We first spotted Terry on Nellie Recordings with a glistening remix of Something Good’s “La Biankini”. Now, he is back in full-force with his latest masterpiece, “Enchanted Waters”! Making the release much more exciting and meaningful, Something Good, Ayleon, and Trim the Fat contribute their own creative interpretations of the track.

It is true that music can take us to places we have never been to before, and music from Terry da Libra always put this statement into play. “Enchanted Waters” is one magical piece that really captures what Terry’s sound is all about— bliss, emotion, and harmony.
We get to hear the denser-sounding side of the Finnish duo, Something Good in their remix of “Enchanted Waters”.

Next up, another Finland-based tandem, Ayleon crafts a version that effortlessly lives out the vivid details “Enchanted Waters” with its very emotional, sunset-inspired guitar climax. Last, but definitely not the least, Nicky Howard delivers a very groovy Trim the Fat remix while still retaining the tranquil vibe of the original track by Terry da Libra.

Interview with SOMETHING GOOD [2010]

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

There is definitely more to the Finnish duo, Something Good than eating oranges while playing the trombone with their feet, catching fish with their bare hands, as well as strolling the city in their funky-colored bicycles! Karolus Viitala and Otto Yliperttula are two young producers who believe that genre-classification has gone obsolete, and that what matters the most is putting a smile on people's faces with their music. Their sound at the moment ranges from smooth-sailing beach-inspired harmonies, to funky filtered club anthems, to uplifting soulful saxophone house tracks, and to groovy techno bombs! Aside from which, these guys have been racing Beatport charts and frequenting top-notch events around their hometown. Something Good-- the name says it all.

Hello Karolus and Otto! What’s up?

Yo Migs! It’s summer time here in Finland and wow what a summer it’s been. I can’t remember the last time we’ve had two weeks of almost 30 degrees celcius up here in the north. Lots of work and lots of great parties.. Last weekend we played at Danceteria Loveboat with Heikki L, Mr. A and Orkidea. Good times.

Can you describe to us your sound in three words?

Variable.
Big.
Groovy.

I’ve been dying to ask this question since your debut on Nellie Recordings: First “Solence”, and then “Kaywana”, how did the soulful saxophone frenzy come to be?

One of our good friends, Antti Hynninen, is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) saxophone players in Finland. We recorded the sax for Solence ages back but we were never really happy with the overall sound of Solence until it snapped into its place. Kaywana was something we had a good feeling about all the way from the beginning. We wanted a loose sub bass groove fitted in with Antti’s magic….and that we got. If you love the sax, you gotta love Mr. Hynninen.

Let's talk about tunes. . . can you share with us SG’s current top three tracks?

Something Good – Walking on Cirque (Something Good Bootleg)
Something Good – Marathon (CD-R)
Heikki L. and Lovetone – Airguitar (Spinnin’)

Aside from Finland, where else around the globe do you see a perfect breeding ground for your music?

We’ve been happy to notice that most of our new fans come from countries other than our native Finland. Switzerland, Germany, Greece and Sweden are at least in the top five. If speaking strictly about a breeding ground, England and France are obviously very important areas to gain attention in.

You guys are such an inspiration to quite a lot of fans out there, especially the youth. What message can you guys give to young aspiring producers who look up to Something Good as their inspiration?

1. This is something one of the greatest djs in Finland told us from the very beginning: Take your time. Nothing happens over night, or in a month or in a year. We haven’t even scratched the surface yet, but we’re pushing as hard as we can.

2. Do lots of remixes and promote yourself in all ways you can. Do videos, podcasts and radioshows. Get your name out there. All publicity is good publicity.

3. Don’t create tracks you think you should to follow the current trends…, create tracks you think sound and feel great… Remember, however, that it’s always a plus if the track is something that might really energize and get the dancefloor moving.

4. Do lots of different kinds of tracks…no one wants to listen to an EP with three identical tracks. That’s just boring.

Here's a question that branched out from curiosity: if your guise had not been “Something Good”, what would it be?

..Hard to say. Impossible even. WE ARE SOMETHING GOOD. FULL STOP.

Okay, how about this one: where do you see Something Good three to five years from now?

It’s really hard to say…but of course we wish great things would happen. Having a massive track. Playing a few big parties…maybe even at Ibiza..? It would be great to wake up in the morning and head to the studio…instead of going to work. I think our dream would be pretty much what Mr. Prydz posted a few weeks back: He had a laptop and a mini-keyboard in front of the pool at his villa in Ibiza and the post was “THIS IS MY STUDIO FOR THE NEXT THREE WEEKS”. It’s a long long way there…but we’re fighters ;) HA!

Would you guys name a track, “Otto & Karolus”?

I don’t think so. Or why not on the other hand. It could be a track we’re I play the flute and Otto plays the trombone with his feet while eating oranges. Every track we have named has gotten the name for a purpose… Every track has a story. If it would fit..then maybe yes?

For the last question, what can we expect from you guys in the near future?

Our new EP was just released. There’s a massive track coming out from us and Finnish producer Tom Fall. We have a huge track in the oven with Lovetone also. A new EP is coming out at the end of August, called MARATHON. The name obviously because we’re gonna be running the Helsinki City Marathon in Mid-August. We have a one week studio in the country side next week….something great is gonna happen there for sure :)

I, Miguel Libre, would like to thank you guys for your time in making this interview possible. Will definitely continue writing about your releases and will surely support you guys until the top! Best regards as always!

Something Good feat. Joanna - Hold On

Monday, July 12, 2010

Karolus and Otto, better known as Something Good, just released one massive vocal release under System Recordings a couple of days ago. If you have been following team SG, you will know that they are on the roll this season!

"Hold On" is the duo's very first vocal track, and thanks to the vocals of Joanna, it's one harmonious piece! Moreover, remixes from Miika Kuisma, Labtacks, TARMO, and Lexa spell out m-a-s-s-i-v-e for this one!

Hold On (Original Mix)
The original mix carries Something Good's trademark delightful, uplifting, and progressive house atmosphere. As mentioned, Joanna's vocals definitely heighten up this piece!

Hold On (Dub)
This vocal-free version adds more emphasis on the sound the guys have mastered.

Hold On (Miika Kuisma Lost Method Remix)
Fellow Finnish producer, Miika Kuisma introduces his Lost Method remix as he presents to us a more straightforward, aerial, and vocal-free interpretation of "Hold On".

Hold On (Labtracks Remix)
Labtracks, the guise of two people who happen to also hail from Finland, show off their talent through their very own rendition of "Hold On". Jarkko Saikkonen and Miikka Vaartela, the guys behind Labtracks, present to us their arsenal of fresh vibes and upbeat melodic sound as heard in this fourth track!

Hold On (TARMO Remix)
Of course, Tarmo Mäkipaja, one of the guys working day-in and day-out with Something Good, also contributes to this release! For the first part of this track, Tarmo kicks in some rolling basslines, and as the melodies progress, his unmistakable emotive piano chords do their job in making magic!

Hold On (Lexa Remix)
We've got quite a good alternative version right here. A clean-cut, climactic, and tech-like progressive track from Lexa gives the release a proper close.
