Justin de Guzman- Lights on My Face

It is an honor to be able to write my first review on the original works of Justin de Guzman, the man behind of DeeperManila Records, who also happens to be a good buddy of ours.

One of the notable releases on DeeperManila Records is this warm and slick track, Lights on My Face. JDG starts off with crisp percussions and filtered synth-work-- definitely the way to start a deep track. After that, a timely slam of the luscious bassline follows and takes the lead. Lights on My Face is a certified-suave lounger that your ears would simple crave for.

Kaspar Kochker- Weekend at Moonlight/ Happiness EP

Kaspar Kochker, who happens to be only 21 years old has done quite a number of productions for the people. If you have been following my previous reviews, you would agree when I say Kaspar's Latvia's brightest star, and will be one of the key figures of the progressive and deep house music scenes in the near future.

Just recently, Kaspar released "Weekend at Moonlight/ Happiness" under Key Recordings. The EP spawned two originals by Kochker and one remix by Canadian David Akermanis. By the way, Key Recordings is a new record label established by producers Luke Shipstad and Nick Stoynoff.

Weekend at Moonlight (Original Mix)

We get to hear the progressive side of Kaspar's productions once again, but this time, there's a little jazzy spark to it-- made possible by the suave bass-work. Moreover, the starry melodies and the dense atmospheric feel gives more substance to the piece. Kaspar Kochker debuts on Key Recordings with his pacifying yet groovy track, Weekend at Moonlight.

Weekend at Moonlight (David Akermanis Remix)

A highly-definitive remix by Canadian prog house guru, David Akermanis. Slamming in stubby and sliding basslines with soaring saturated synths really gets the energy going in the earlier part of the remix. As the brass instruments join in, emotive piano piece echo as they give way to the climax. A sure-hit track for classy bars at night, the David Akermanis remix is simply genial.

Happiness (Original Mix)

Kaspar Kochker gives a proper close to his release with this flourished gem, Happiness. Very upbeat in composition, Happiness provides really juicy bass-work and highly-infectious progressive house melodies-- simply a track of pure bliss and optimism.

Shipstad & Warren- Near Perfect EP

Luke Shipstad and Dylan Warren, collectively known as Shipstad & Warren, have finally docked on Nellie shores with their mind-levitating debut release, “Near Perfect”. Thanks to the stunning production from the duo, the original mix of Near Perfect caters lush progressive house sound with laidback atmosphere and easy-going melodies.

Aside from that, Argentina-based sound-smith, B.O.N.G., delivers a heart-warming remix with his denser-sounding basslines topped with emotive and echoing piano samples—definitely a track that would take you to places you have never been before.

The release does not end there. The version of melodic progressive house aficionado, Schodt, brings the EP to a proper close. Henrik Schodt’s sharp and saturated melodies, alongside with his soaring climax, really do the job well.

Joonas Hahmo- Brainflush/ Now or Never

I thought we have lost another champion in the progressive house scene when Joonas Hahmo went on a hiatus after the release of his remix on "Captured" back in July 2009. Little did I know, he was busy setting up his very own record label, Hahmo Recordings-- the start of a decade-long Renaissance for this young Finnish producer.

Joonas Hahmo, like what I have said, is a producer based in Finland, and he has been making music for the people since 2004. He started off with a project named Alt + F4 with fellow countryman Matt Kotala. In this outfit, the duo were able to produce quite a decent number of trance-edged melodies on various labels like Anjunabeats and Sential Recordings.

Among the labels Hahmo had previously signed to as a solo artist, Anjunadeep is the label we can call his home for it was in this family where he was able to release top-notched gems like "Cocktail Bar", "Sound of Sunday", "Together", "Tampere by Night", and several more. (I really mean it when I say "top-notched".)

Just a couple of days ago, Joonas Hahmo finally releases "Brainflush" and "Now or Never", two tracks that signal the christening of his new shiny label.

Brainflush

This sizzling new track is a gift from the heavens! Having a trance-edge appeal gives its listeners an ecstatic feel, while the soaring "Hahmo-only" melodies paint the track gold. Together with the never-faltering basslines J.H. brings, he also snuck in familiar sounds in the breakdown. Brainflush definitely brings the finest out of Hahmo.

Now or Never

Lowering the energy levels a bit, Joonas brings the EP to a close with his chunky piece, Now or Never. Electrifying melodies play as the stomping kicks enter, after that the buzzing basslines join in the fun. Composition-wise, Now or Never is steady and rock-solid. I personally find this as a perfect set-starter for live gigs, it really brings the energy where it's supposed to be.

A new and exciting Hahmo era has begun! With his popping tracks on the pipe, and with the rise of his record label, there simply is no turning back for J.H. Clean the dust off your monitors, and prepare your eardrums for the return of Finland's finest.

Adam Epps- Evora/ Come Back EP

I really appreciate music that are simple in composition, yet, albeit their simplicity, these tunes hit the spot.

As he made his debut last February on Bombra Records, Chelyabinsk-grown producer, Adam Epps, takes the initiative to make Russian progressive more world-renown with his "Evora/ Come Back" EP.

Evora

With sharp and saturated melodies, Epps brings together a simple-sounding, yet upbeat track straight from Russian soil. Definitely one of the tunes I would play on one sunny day!

Come Back

As he retains the glowing energy of the track, Epps gives more emphasis on his razor-edged chords. By the way, people who like stable or steady tunes would indulge themselves in this track.

We have heard it before and it has been reaffirmed once again by Adam Epps: Bomba Records brings only the best and the most authentic from homegrown Russian progressive artists.

Interview with KASPAR KOCHKER [2010]

The year 2006 was a pivotal moment in Kaspar Kochker's life for it was that year when he finally embraced electronic music. And like most aficionados, he never looked back.

The love for electronic dance music made this 21-year old student get involved in producing music. Moreover, this inevitable desire to create music allowed him to spend hours experimenting and tweaking knobs that finally gave way to Kaspar perfecting his production ability.

In just two years, this Latvian wonder, with the help of his good friend Viktor Fox, soared sky-high with his new-found talent.

Kaspar's innovative shifting of genres can be heard through his tunes on Nellie Recordings like the deep and funky "Let's Funk Together" and the upbeat "Atlantic".

1. Hey man! How’s 2010 been so far for you as a producer?

Hey! I feel really great, now that more people are enjoying my music! For me, this is very important because it gives me more inspiration to innovate my sound.

2. Just wondering, how were you able to come up with this “Kaspar Kochker sound” we all hear today?

I like to experiment with sound. Sometimes, I’m into funky melodies, sometimes, deep, and even techy. You can really hear it in my tracks. For me, I can’t simply stay on one kind of sound, it has to evolve. I also love taking elements from disco and jazz music, and the way I see it, people appreciate them. Aside from that, I do have a tendency to make sound influenced by filtered house music.

3. Can you name us some artists who have made great impacts on your career as a producer and DJ?

My first inspiration was Mr. Eric Prydz, and then followed by Junior Jack, Kid Crème, and Electricano. Their musical styles simply inspire me to keep innovating my sound.

4. Among the places you have not yet been to, which country in the world would you like to visit, given the chance, and why?

Honestly, I have not been to many countries, but if I had the chance, I would visit Japan. I love watching documentaries on Japanese culture and history. I just love what they have.

5. How is the Kaspar Kochker like outside the studio or off the decks?

Summer is near and surely, I will be enjoying more free time fishing and living in the countryside, but for now, I need to finish some stuff for university.

6. You are one young talented producer; do you have any habits back in your childhood that may have played a big part of who you are today?

I really don’t know. Everything started with music improvisation… It’s quite weird, but I like it.

7. As part of the new generation of young producers, what message can you give out to the young aspiring producers out there who want to follow your footsteps?

Be unique in your music! Regardless of how crazy your ideas are, just do them, but the most important thing is that you must love what you are doing.

9. In your opinion, how can music unite people?

Music brings ecstasy to people! I mean look at all the happy people dancing and getting along because of the music. It’s brilliant what music can do for people.

10. If you were given a chance to do something you’ve never done, what would it be? Take up photography? Learn how to cook? Climb Mount Everest? Why?

It would be having some gigs around Europe for the summer. I just want to see people enjoy electronic dance music and it could be a good way to promote myself and my music.

11. Cheese or milk?

Cheese and milk.

12. Name one DJ you would like to spin with in a major event. What’s the reason behind this?

Hmm… that is a tricky question, but it would be exciting if the DJ was a girl.

13. What is in-store for Kaspar Kochker in the near future? Releases? Events?

Of course, a lot of new releases soon! For events, I can’t say anything for now because I have a lot of University work. We’ll see what will happen.

Something Good- La Biankini EP

The name, Something Good, says it all. It just takes a one click to experience feel-good music from the Finnish duo, Otto Yliperttula and Karolus Viitala. Making their land on Nellie Recordings, Something Good brought with them good company and good vibes as they present "La Biankini". Dave Cortex, TARMO, and Terry da Libra join in the fun as they take part in the remix duties of the release.

La Biankini (Original Mix)
Definitely brings summer to cold lands, while it brings relaxing vibes to bustling summer cities like Manila. La Biankini is one summer anthem I would be enjoying as I hit the beaches soon. To add to that, I'm really enjoying the emotive and slow piano samples as well as the atmosphere of this track. Pure essence of summer all packed in eight minutes.

La Biankini (Club Mix)
Leave the original mix on the beach, and take this version with you to the clubs. Tailor-made for nightclubs and bars, the club mix caters stubby basslines , saturated sound ,and energy-packed melodies.

La Biankini (Dave Cortex Remix)
Moodier version of the release. American producer Dave Cortex adds emphasis on the nostalgic piano samples this time. Aside from that, more stubby basslines and the levitating atmosphere also play their part well.

La Biankini (TARMO Remix)
Fellow Finland-based producer, Tarmo Mäkipaja crafts a hipper remix and a smoother remake on La Biankini. I like the part when TARMO plays around with the piano melody at the 1:46 mark and at the 4:04 mark as well.

La Biankini (Terry Da Libra Remix)

This is the "up there" version of La Biankini. Terry Da Libra adds a bouncy feel to the track with his electrifying basslines. Aside from that, upbeat melodies and atmospheric ambiance were also incorporated in La Biankini.

Now I know why DJs and producers like Marcus Schossow, Ashley Wallbridge, and Markus Schulz supported this release. This La Biankini EP is a certified "happy music" EP-- just what you need to spice up your Summer more.

Interview with Kristoffer Ljungberg (Nellie Recordings) [2010]

Kristoffer Ljungberg is half of the duo managing the Swedish progressive house music label, Nellie Recordings. Alongside with Alaa El-Bechlaoui, Kris is the Artist & Repertoire person on the label, making him the person responsible in making sure that producers release quality material as well as making sure that the artists themselves maintain good ties with their fans. With those being said, I present to you the Soundscapes-exclusive interview with the Head Honcho of Nellie Recordings:

1. Hey Kris, how has 2010 been for you so far as the Head Honcho of Nellie Recordings?

Hey Miguel! It's been all right. Lots of new music and lots of new artists. I'm excited!

2. Can you name us one artist whom you would like to work with, or be on Nellie Recordings? What’s the reason behind this?

Matti & Erkka, the guys behind Michael Cassette. I think they are outstanding and the music they give out under Michael Cassette is just incredible. Melodies to die for! Very inspiring music. It would be a dream come true to work with them.

3. When you’re off the studios, what are the things you would usually do?

Lots of movies and tv-shows like Dexter, House M.D. etc. I spend way too much time watching them I think. But hey, I love it!

4. What had/ have gotten you to the progressive house circuit? Influences? Circumstances?

No matter what genre I'm listening to, melodies or a couple of nice chord changes have been the only thing I care about. I used to listen to a lot of hiphop back in the day and I didn't even care about the lyrics, I was all about the melodics. Anyway, this brought me to the progressive and guys like Claes Rosen, Paul Keeley, Michael Cassette, Dinka and so on.

5. Aside from Sweden, where else around the globe do you think would be a perfect breeding-ground for Nellie Recordings? How come?

Worldwide brother! There's always room for Nellie. All jokes aside, I don't really know. Music is such a universal language and taste is individual so, I can't really say a specific country!

6. With all the exciting stuff on Nellie Recordings, how do you see your record label in the next three to five years?

I don't even dare to think three to five years ahead, haha! I'm getting anxious already. I know the dream is to have a steady income obviously and live fully from it. But it takes a lot of hard work and good connections to make it and there's a lot of good competition out there for a relatively narrow style as "melodic prog music" or what we should call it. There's only a few who's really into it and I haven't even been into it as much as I've wanted. I don't know if that answers your question? Hehe

7. Let’s talk about globe-trotting: If you were given the chance to visit a country you haven’t visited before, what would it be? Why?

Venice (Italy) looks amazing. Imagine just sitting there on a café, drinking a cup of coffee and enjoy life. Or maybe some obscure little place in France on a nice summer day. Baguettes and wine for all the money! But I think my anxiety for flying will stand in the way for me traveling. No one wants to join me on trains I bet!

8. Aside from progressive house music, what other genres do you enjoy listening to?

To be honest, I barely listen to anything these days. Since I got into the house music scene I've been so focused and especially on progressive house. It's a shame really. A few weeks ago I got a little emotional because I realized I've missed out on so much music. I had no idea what was going on in the music world outside house.

However, I used to listen to a lot of hiphop but not that gangster rap shit, bling bling bullshit. I grew up listening to EPMD, Gang Starr and Das EFX. That's the stuff! I also had a period where I was very down in Nirvana and I still enjoy it. Another favourite is Katie Melua. She might be my dream girl as well! So I have to say my taste is (at least was) widely spread.

9. Any tips for new producers on getting signed on Nellie Recordings?

Be prepared, show a lot of energy and enthusiasm and be happy. Motivated and enthusiastic people are very inspiring to me. So, well, I guess that's what I want.

10. What do artists on the label have in common?

Except being good producers I think I've managed to gather a bunch of really nice, humble and grateful people. Even though I might be an asshole sometimes it's important for me to have nice and respectful people on the team. I will not tolerate a bad attitude and especially not towards fans. Manners! So, if you feel you've been treated wrong by any of my boys - rat them out! I will punish them. ;)

11. Favorite gadget in the studio:

I don't have a studio since I'm not a producer per say. But my new Yamaha HS80M is very nice. Though I think my neighbors beg to differ! Other than that it must be my headphones because I have them on me like 15 hours a day, even if I'm not listening to music. Very strange. I'm so used to having them on me it feels weird to take them off when I sit in front of my computer. Feels like I'm about to go somewhere.

12. Favorite alcoholic beverage (if any):

Beer! Oh gosh, now you got me thinking about beer. My favourite one is Corona. YES I SAID IT! I'm not a big fan of dark beers, I want the light stuff like Corona, Budweiser and so on. Love it! But I could go for a glass of red wine too.

13. What can we expect from Nellie Recordings soon? Releases? Events? Promotions?

Well, a lot of new music obviously. I got stuff coming up with Alandanat, Invisible Sounds, Playton and a lot more. EDU just finished a new EP for me as well + a remix actually on a new Magnetic Brothers single. This is just a little bit. More nice tracks coming up!

In terms of events and stuff, nothing special really. But if you live in Sweden and maybe near Linköping / Norrköping you have to watch out for a new club night opened by my partner in crime Alaa. It's called "I Love House" and they will hopefully run a monthly club in Linköping. That's about it!

Helvetic Nerds- Walk On EP

Swiss-made Helvetic Nerds turns up the Summer heat with their new EP, "Walk On". Released under the incredible Unreleased Digital , "Walk On" EP spawned two great progressive house tracks and one radio edit.

Walk On (Original Mix)/ (Radio Edit)
Damn, what a genial tune this is. Bouncy and fresh, the melodies of this track keep the energy alive as the hip vocals send a meaningful message to the people-- perfect five-star tune right here! Just remember man, this is the soul of your life.

Hammer & Tongs
Something edgier from the Nerds. Growling basslines and sharp keyboard melodies, topped off with saturated samples, Hammer & Tongs is just as awesome as the artist name. Oh yeah, the climax and the breakdown are sick, perfect for beach parties.

An EP packed with freshness and attitude, the Helvetic Nerds gave me a great first impression with their summer-spiced EP, "Walk On". I would love to review more of their tracks in the future.

Marcus Schossow finally makes his debut on Anjunadeep under the mysterious guise 1985. Being an electro-trance gourmand that he is, Schossow has perfected the concoction for lethal, gut-grinding, electronic dance music, and this two-track EP signals his docking on Anjunadeep shores. By the way, London first appeared on Anjunadeep 02, so be sure to check that out too!

Atmospheric and dreamy, London is a treat to aficionados out there who like their Schossow tracks served mild. Albeit that, this track perfectly fits Schossow's other tunes from his debut album, Outside the Box because of its composition. Let the music take control...

1985
No, this is not Ernesto and Bastian's Thrill, this is Marcus Schossow's 1985. (If you're a trancehead, you'll understand what I am saying.) Anyway, grounding basslines are on this track-- something I have been expecting (and enjoying) from Schossow's tunes lately. Aside from that, 1985 also has nocturnal synths flying around, and I like it. Mean and straightforward melodies with a crazy solo, 1985 is one stomping piece fastidious listeners would worship.

Marcus Schossow takes progressive house music to the next level through his alter-ego, 1985.

Being the debut release of Paul Keeley for this year, Disco Belle EP comes in five different variations, and one if which was featured in the new chart-topping compilation album, Anjunadeep 02. To add to the list of firsts, Disco Belle is Paul's first vocal track ever (if I remember it right).


Vocal Mix & Dub Mix

If you like more emphasis on the piano and the other melodies, then the dub mix is for you. However, if you're more of a listener who wants something to sing along with, then get the original vocal track. Disco Belle carries the traditional sound of Anjunadeep: blunt sweeping basslines, echoing aquatic-inspired piano melodies , and emotive breakdowns. These two variants of the track signal Keeley's dive back to the great blue Anjunadeep.

Peter Martin Remix

Quite techy, haunting, and pumping-- the Peter Martin remix is the Disco Belle of the dark side.


Shawn Mitiska & Ben Preston Vocal Mix & Dub Mix

Two impressive progressive artists join forces to create a fresh remix of the track. We have known Mitiska for hanging out with Cerf and Jaren to create emotionally-packed, progressive tunes, but this time Mitiska's collaborator is Ben Preston, a British progressive house and trance mainstay who is also half of "Tastemakers" and "Soulmakers".

The versions crafted by the duo are quite unique, should I say. Crispy melodies can never go wrong with groovy basslines topped with Keeley's synths sound-- fresh pick on a sunny day.

Gui Boratto- No Turning Back

Gui Boratto's "No Turning Back" has been infecting the local airwaves for several months now, and I, too, am infected. Tagged under "techno" and "tech house", this is one sophisticated track even listeners outside the electronic dance music circuit can enjoy.

Subtle melodies and tech synths make up the first part of the song. After the build-up, a cutting-edge sound akin to an electric guitar swings by. The vocals are really unique come to think of it. Very nostalgic and emotional, the vocals carry the feel of the whole song.

I guess my words can only say so much about this beautiful song.

B.O.N.G.- Back to Floripa

Summer is just around the corner, and my system, once again, starts to yearn for warm, sun-drenched melodies to stimulate and indulge.


As I allowed my senses to carefully pick tracks out there, I stumbled upon B.O.N.G.’s Back to Floripa track. Actually, Argentina’s talent is not a new name to me; Juan Carlos Villalba’s tracks have been made familiar to me through frequent appearance on various progressive house portals. Aside from that, it was in Jaytech’s music podcast where I first heard and appreciated his sound. Released under the humble and promising Silk Digital Records, it is a pleasure to review B.O.N.G. - Back to Floripa (Original Mix).


Back to Floripa is a melting pot of a minimal version of Dinka’s sound and a denser-sounding Mango. Aside from its stubby basslines, a very melodious and soothing riff brush the track. Surprisingly, Floripa is also an atmospheric track— its subtle echoes add more essence to it. Simple—yes, once again, I use this word to describe something exploding with bliss and crisp.

Oasis vs Myon & Shane54- Wonderless (Monster Mix)

I've been aching to write a review on this for quite sometime since I first heard this on Myon & Shane54's massive mash-up set for Coldharbour Day [7.28.09].

For M&s54 fans out there, just one listen to this track can spell to us that the backbone of this is Myon & Shane54's very own Helpless (Monster Mix), a track featuring the highly-talented Aruna Abrams. Before I forget, this impressive mash-up by the Hungarian duo may also be tagged as "Oasis- Wonderwall (Myon & Shane54 Helpless Mix)".

With a breath, the monster is unleashed. The vocals of Liam Gallagher were slightly reverbed to give it a "big room" effect while at the same time complementing the overall thick, heavy, and electro-infected composition of the track.

Aside from it being a stadium anthem, M&S54's take on Wonderwall is indeed another certified banger as dominantly heard in the breakdown. Yes, the riff accompanying the vocals do have some energy packed in them, but the true banger spirit can be felt in the deadly breakdown. Just to add, the breakdown itself is made up of Myon & Shane54's newly-concocted monstrous sound, and I like it.
