Silverfilter- Manila Sound

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

About:

"Manila Sound" is the latest from Manila's very own Cyril Sorongon aka. Silverfilter! Released under the Florida-based electro and breaks label, Kick It Recordings, "Manila Sound" brings to life brand new electrifying sound from Silverfilter in breaks format. For Silverfilter, "Manila Sound" takes him back to the classic sounds of breaks similar to that of Adam Freeland's. It all started with that sweet portamento lead synth, according to Silverfilter himself, and the rest is history.

Rounding it up are stunning remixes from Kick It artists: Kwerk, Botbass, and Original Primate.

Sounds Like:

For the original mix, get ready to for an electrifying head-bobbing track from Silverfilter: expect in-your-face bass, mad-solid kick drums, and dirty synths! Kwerk lands a remix for grinding and pounding, still in breakbeat form, while Botbass concocts a dirty, trashy electro house remix of "Manila Sound". Original Primate, lastly, will strip your inhibitions off with his dark and tribal reinterpretation of Silverfilter's original work-- Let the music play!

Recommendation:

We don't often review electro and breaks here on Soundscapes, but this was actually a good excuse to do one. We recommend all the tracks in this release: from the Original mix by Silverfilter to the Kwerk, Botbass, and Original Primate remixes!

Da Funk- Need For Faith

Saturday, December 10, 2011

About:

Swiss producer and Acryl Music head honcho Da Funk, takes over for the label's golden release, "Need For Faith"! Acryl Music has been industry since 2004, but it is only now that the label releases its 50th release-- a clear sign that it's always quality over quantity for Da Funk and the guys behind the label. Together with the original, expect authentic deep house remixes from Si Brad (Simon Bradshaw), Pete Moss, Elmar Schubert, and Q-Burns Abstract Message.

Sounds Like:

"Need For Faith" caters the unifying sound of Acryl and the trademark fat analog bass driven sound of Da Funk. Aside from which, you can expect a smooth-flowing line-up of hazy, spherical, and echoing synths.

Si Brad's remix spells vintage all over-- edgy discoid bass, deep atmosphere, and hypnotizing synths. Pennsylvania's Pete Moss drops a lush yet stubby remix of "Need For Faith", while German producer, Elmar Schubert turns over a chic and irresistible reinterpretation. For the last remix, "Need For Faith" falls onto the hands of Q-Burns Abstract Message as it turns into one intricate piece-- head-nodding stabs, tunnel-echoing atmospheric pads, analog bass all perfectly patched up together!

Recommendation:

We would not be wasting our time in writing a proper review of a release not worth recommending, would we? But we also couldn't help announcing our favorite picks in the release either!

So here it goes: the original mix is fantastic-- it perfectly sums up what Acryl Music is all about. Much respect to Da Funk! For our favorite remix, it's got to be Elmar Schubert's: so seemingly simple (but we producers know it's not) yet its addicting groove is out of this world!

Shipstad & Warren- Sex, Lies and Melody

Sunday, March 6, 2011

Sex, Lies and Melody-- what an appropriate title for a release made by two very young producers! By "very young" we meant aged 18 and below, but from what we've learned from our interview with them months ago, Luke Shipstad and Dylan Warren don't really consider their ages as obstacles to delivering unadulterated melodies to the people. For the past year, the duo has been busy solidifying their sound as they have bounced from label to label. Now, taking their highly-melodic progressive house music imprint to the next level, Shipstad & Warren releases "Sex, Lies and Melody" on Songbird.

Shipstad & Warren for this release takes on a lighter and more easygoing approach to their productions. "Sex, Lies and Melody", the original, brings together mind-levitating arps, emotive progressions, lush atmosphere, and highly-upbeat structure! Roddy Reynaert, a producer who has appeared on similar labels with S&W delivers something more climactic. With its soaring leads and trance-like approach on the "Sex, Lies and Melody", the Roddy Reynaert remix definitely is one good alternative to the original!

Ivan Novich & Richard Wilkins- College Fund

Monday, January 31, 2011

The waiting days for Amibella junkies are over! Seventeen year-old producer and label owner, Ivan Novich, together with Richard Wilkins, proudly unveils Amibella Records’ debut release entitled, “College Fund”! Not just that, the track garners an electrifying trance reinterpretation in the hands of Colorado-based producer, Venaccio as the second track of the release.

Characterized by its dirty, grinding and wobbling basslines— the original mix of “College Fund” is simply a manifestation of Ivan and Richard’s Deadmau5 inspiration. Venaccio’s remix, on the other hand, caters a unique sound packed with orchestra melodies and a pile-driving breakdown!

College Fund” is just a hint of more exciting things to come from the label in the near future— keep your eyes peeled!

Craig Stewart- Make Me EP

Monday, January 3, 2011

Craig Stewart is known for going on a pursuit with Johnny Montana in perfecting moonlight-inspired deep and soulful house music as heard in their productions and remixes like "Lunar Eyes", "Million to One", and "State of Mind". Make Me EP— Stewart's latest release on Acryl Music is quite different— it is minus Johnny Montana and the soulful vibe, but a plus to the technical and groovy sound of the deep! To celebrate this release, Alex V, Office Gossip, and Acryl Music head honcho, Da Funk also contribute their respective remixes to the package.

Make Me (Original Mix)
The original mix of "Make Me" is an easy-going head-nodding piece from Craig Stewart—definitely a soundtrack perfect for those lazy afternoons!

Do For Love (Original Mix)
A heavily-flanged, strong-riffed piece comes from Craig Stewart as the second track of the release. We get to hear the sharper side of his productions with “Do For Love”.

Do For Love (Alex V Remix)
Tossa del Mar-based, Barcelona-born producer Alex V hooks-up “Do For Love” with a smoother, more elegant, and a more atmospheric approach. This serves as a great alternative to the original!

Make Me (Office Gossip Remix)
Second remix comes all the way from London. In the hands of Office Gossip, “Make Me” turns into a stubby, hazy, and a laidback soundtrack.

Make Me (Da Funk’s Numb Soul Remix)
Dany steps-in with his newest sound-signature, the "Numb Soul". For this last remix on the release, Da Funk surprises us with trademark thick and stubby basslines, gray and chilled atmosphere, as well as echoing and haunting melodies. This track draws the release to a silencing close.

Make Me EP, together with its marvelous remixes from Alex V, Office Gossip, and Da Funk, is now available for purchase! Head over to your favorite download portal and support this release!

Summer (Max Mason Terrace Remix)
The remix title says it all. UK’s MM stirs things up with his saxophone-injected terrace soundtrack— pure class!

Interview with SHIPSTAD & WARREN [2010]

Friday, October 29, 2010

U.S. and Canadian born, Luke Shipstad & Dylan Warren; both still teenagers, have made a sudden appearance on the Progressive House music scene. Both after only a few years of producing varied electronic music, ranging from Ambient to Trance, the duo discovered Progressive House. Though still teenagers, Shipstad & Warren are at the beginning of a long career.

Together their sound has been described as emotional, melodically driven, deep, powerful, uplifting and not to mention easy on the ears! Combined their varied styles have gained huge recognition and support from big names including, Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Judge Jules, Paul Oakenfold, Andy Moor, Solarstone, Rank1, Kenneth Thomas, Marco V, Sied Van Riel, Marcus Schossow, Thrillseekers, Miss Nine, Mango, Answer42, Roddy Reynaert and loads more!

As DJ's, you could say that Shipstad & Warren are ready for the masses. Shipstad & Warren will continue to grab the attention of audiences across the world through the aid of technology and their productions.

Now moving forward with new releases and remixes left and right, the duo is making releases on many different powerful labels including, Black Hole, (Songbird),  Armada, Spinnin’, Proton, and Nellie. Seeing no signs of slowing down, the production and DJ duo are in full force, ready to take over the Progressive House genre.

[Official Shipstad & Warren Biography]

Luke and Dylan, how are things lately?

Things have been going absolutely spectacular! We’ve recently settled down with quite a few releases on Black Hole Recordings on their Songbird imprint and have been working heavily with the guys from Suspect 44 (Also on Black Hole Recordings and soon to be showing some very impressive credentials ;) )

Can you share to us how you two started producing music?

Well back in 2008 we met through a mutual friend and since then we’ve noticed our sounds melding so well together that we figured we might as well create a duo! We both complemented each others sounds and production methods very well and were always happy with the result.

Our inspirations run wild all the time, all the way from ambient to electro styled tunes. Although our home is Progressive House so you’ll notice lots of influence from the genre’s heavy hitters such as, Deadmau5, Jay Lumen, Andy Duguid, Arty, Answer 42, Schodt and more recently Suspect 44.

Aside from making music, what else do you enjoy doing?

More music making! Haha. Well We’re both gaming nerds and computer nerds...We guess it comes with the job of music production... We both have outside jobs as well aside from music to pull in extra money here and there.

Your latest release on Nellie Recordings, “Last Chance”, is out now. Can you share with us your inspiration behind this release?

To be honest that recording had no particular influence. We’re certainly not going to sit here and type you some sob story or beautiful sunset that thoroughly inspired us to make it...The fact of the matter is that a lot of music is just plain created by musicians for the sake of making music! Now we’re not stating that ALL music is crafted this way...but in this instance...It was!

In your opinion, how has being young contributed to your career?

Well you’re certainly right in thinking there’s an advantage to starting early. You get to play around with genres, find which sound you belong to and you have lots of time to develop your sound and production styles. Another beauty that comes with being young is the ability to switch any of these as any time!

That being said, there are some disadvantages. Club attending age in many countries is 18 and because half of us is under 18, having gigs turned down because of age is common...However, because we’re so young, we can gain support from the masses before we being touring and add an audience that wants us before we go out and play :)

Weighing the upsides and downsides of the internet and technology to the music industry in general, how do you bring your name out there in the advent of the digital era?

Make music as brilliantly as possible without flooding the market with mundane crap that everyone has already heard! Getting our name out on youtube, getting the uploaders to get our songs out there so their tens of thousands of subscribers get to see our music! And also. Promo, promo, promo. The internet is by far the easiest “fame maker” tool of all time. There are people that become phenomenons over night because of the internet!

However this does lead to the topic of illegal downloading on the internet...It’s by far the number one source of promo...but on the same token...if us artists are going to continue to make music, we need to make money from it as well. Hopefully soon there will be a decent balance in this difficult equation...but neither of us really see a resolve anytime soon.

As part of the frontier of the youth in the electronic dance music scene, what message would you like to send out to all young and aspiring producers around the world?

First and foremost, please stop asking for our autographs :P

In all seriousness, just keep trying and working your hardest to sound the way you want to in your head ;) Listen to your track next to more successful artists...if it sounds just as good in terms of production and quality, then maybe you’re on the right track! If not, then maybe back the drawing board?

None of our success happened over night and as noted above...we’ve been working at it for about two years now, so if your first ever track doesn’t sound like the one hit wonder you were hoping for...don’t beat yourself up over it and just continue to work at it!

Where do you see yourselves three to five years from now?

In a pool next to twelve dozen gorgeous women. That’s right. That’s 144 gorgeous women for those of you not keeping track.

Also hopefully touring the globe with Suspect 44 as well as establishing ourselves exclusively on a predominant Progressive House label.

Can you name one restaurant you cannot live without?

Well this question certainly came out of the blue hahahaha.

Shipstad: Benihana...Two words, Hibachi. Shrimp.

Warren: KFC, cause I'm black.

What can we expect from you guys in the near future?

Well we do have a New York gig that we’re working on at the moment...So all you east-coasters can look forward to that!

As far as releases go...As we noted above, we’ve established ourselves on Black Hole (Songbird) for quite a few releases into the end of 2010 and beginning of 2011 as Shipstad & Warren as well as a collaboration with Suspect 44 called “Broken” which is available now at all major online retailers.

I, Miguel Libre, would like to personally thank you for your time and patience in accomplishing this interview! May you have a bright career ahead! Support as always!

Cheers Miguel! Thank you for the opportunity to do this interview and thank you for your constant support. Thank you to the fans as well! And always know, if you want to talk to either of us, find us on facebook (We usually respond!)

Hypnotizing (Original Mix)
Cross-over some elements from sunset downtempo tracks with deep night-dwelling basslines and glowing pads, you will more or less get something like the first track on this release, the original mix of Hypnotizing.

Hypnotizing (Chris Girard Remix)
An edgier and more tech-oriented approach to "Hypnotizing" by Canadian producer Chris Girard lands as the second track of the package-- good alternative indeed.

Estonian deep house mainstay Kyka once again appears on a Cabrio release to spice things up! With a superb arsenal of sounds on the line, Kyka kicks-off an upbeat and groovy reinterpretation of "Hypnotizing"!

Hypnotizing (Ricky Inch Kytte Dub)
Ricky Inch is back with two fresh remixes for Cabrio! First of the two is his Kytte Dub, a manifestation of the deeper and darker sounds of  Inch. With this, Ricky Inch definitely lives out the name of this release!

Hypnotizing (Ricky Inch Saxy Dub)
Going out the rabbit hole, the release garners a very jazzy version as heard in Ricky Inch's Saxy dub, the second of this two remixes in the package. The breakdown with its saxophone solo is simply something to die for!

Dave Storm & Ricky Inch feat. Brian Lucas- I Don't Know

Friday, July 16, 2010

I don't know with you, but I think I just found one of the best vocal deep house tracks this year! That's right, two of the leading producers in the scene, Dave Storm and Ricky Inch worked together, with American vocalist Brian Lucas, to produce such a remarkable masterpiece. Moreover, celebrating this huge release are Dave Mayer, Deepbreath, Kyka, Soul Cola, URH, and Rony Breaker with their unique interpretations of "I Don't Know".

I Don't Know (Original Mix)
A really tight and upbeat groove exploding in fresh deep house sounds from the masters. You would not want to miss out on the classy strings and the wonderful vocals from Brian Lucas!

I Don't Know (Ricky Inch Dub)
Inch kicks off with another suave, flawless, and smooth-sailing melodies. Aside from which, the bass-work and the flanged guitars are something to look forward to!

I Don't Know (Dave Mayer Remix) [With acapella and instrumental versions]
Dutch producer Dave Mayer delivers a stunning piece filled with hip chord-play, punchy percussion.

I Don't Know (Soul Cola Remix)/ (Soul Cola Saxy Dub)
Hailing all the way from the North, Russian electronic band, Soul Cola steps in for "I Don't Know", leaving two fantastic deep house groovers up for grabs. First is the Soul Cola remix, a track quite impossible not to dance to. Up second is the Saxy dub, a luscious reinterpretation of the former remix with infectious saxophone melodies-- simple

I Don't Know (URH & Rony Breaker Remix)/ (URH & Rony Breaker Dub)
URH and Rony Breaker take two for the release and came up with chilled and stomping tracks-- brilliant!

I Don't Know (Kyka Remix)
The release garners a second upbeat version of "I Don't Know", thanks to Kyka. Something unique in this remix are the manipulation of the vocal track and the incorporation of housey chords.

I Don't Know (Deepbreath & Ricky Inch Remix)
We get to hear a tropical-themed track from Deepbreath and Ricky Inch. Moreover, this particular remix is a melting pot of a pinch of mild, echoing strings, a dash of saxophone samples, a tablespoon of marching bongos, a handful of soulful vocals, a cup of sassy basslines, and a box of chilled chords.

Ceremony Records is definitely on the roll with this massive deep house release! Support "I Don't Know" today!

Vinyl Dharma - Head For the Hills

Friday, May 28, 2010

Texas-based indie band, Vinyl Dharma goes EDM for the second time on Cromarti Records. This time around, we get to hear remixes from top-notched artists, Bas van Essen, PROFF, Dave Cortex, and Phunktastike.

First off, a remix from Dutch producer, Bas van Essen. This remix, named as "Head For The Hills (Bas van Essen Dub)", caters to listeners who enjoy deep-drifting basslines and uplifting chords. If you're juggling the names Kaskade, Deadmau5, and Adam K. & Soha in your head, then you are one keen listener.

When you see the letters P.R.O.F.F. on the release cover, you already, more or less, have an idea that the release is something worth the purchase. Likewise, Vadim "PROFF" Ershov's remix is the soundtrack for aficionados inclined towards the sunny-side up style of progressive house music.

Well, the next name isn't really new on the block. American producer Dave Cortex also takes remix duties for "Head For the Hills". We've last spotted him on Soundscapes with his remix on Something Good's "La Biankini" as well as Incognet's "Avesta"-- both from Nellie Recordings. Dave's remix signals the departure from the release's uplifting, melodic approach thanks to his collection of crunchy synths and stubby basslines. Having said those, I believe this is the version that should be played more often in clubs.

Hailing from Cantabria, Jose Mariano Piriz, with the guise, Phunktastike, brings the release to a close with his tech-inclined piece. Atmospheric yet steady, this is the Phunktastike Remix.

This release made me look forward to the future releases on Cromarti Records. After all, their quality tunes are really worth the listen.

Electrobios, The Flyers & Mike Sonar - Deep In The Heart EP

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Stepping-in for the golden release of Nellie Recordings, Electrobios joins forces with the high-achieving trio, The Flyers & Mike Sonar to release “Deep in the Heart”.

The original work by the four-man team brings electrifying basslines, hammering kicks, and head-nodding grooves—you might just catch yourself unconsciously tapping your fingers and feet with the beat!

For the second track, American producer,
Derek Howell molds Deep in the Heart into a techno piece with his deep and hypnotizing sound. Last, but definitely not the least, Alexander Andreev, publicly known as Alandanat, remixes Deep in the Heart in such a way it becomes a very downtownesque soundtrack. Moreover, Alandanat breaks four-by-four music standards with his climactic breakbeats.

Electrobios, The Flyers & Mike Sonar truly deserves a heartwarming welcome to Nellie Recordings as the label celebrates its fiftieth release!
